The unique aesthetic of this inspiring woman is recognised worldwide, and her paintings reflect a life marked by pain. Having contracted polio as a child, she began grappling with disability. However, it wasn\u2019t until the age of 18, after a bus accident in which she fractured her spine, collarbone, pelvis, several ribs and a leg, that Frida took up painting.<\/p>\n<p>Spending much time in bed, unable to sit up and bored, led her to rediscover her passion for painting. With the aid of a mirror for self-portraits and an easel adapted to allow her to paint lying down, she created some of her most significant works, such as The Broken Column and The Wounded Deer, reflecting the pain and suffering she experienced and channelled through art.<\/p>\n<h2>Mary Verghese (1925-1986, India)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1998\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1998\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1998 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/batec-dev.wwwarcelona.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/Mary-Verghese-woman-disability-batecmobility-e1709803009285-300x276.png\" alt=\"Mary Verghese, the first wheelchair surgeon\" width=\"300\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/batec-dev.wwwarcelona.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/Mary-Verghese-woman-disability-batecmobility-e1709803009285-300x276.png 300w, https:\/\/batec-dev.wwwarcelona.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/Mary-Verghese-woman-disability-batecmobility-e1709803009285.png 532w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1998\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: www.semanticscholar.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mary Verghese is one of the most important Indian women in terms of the legacy she has left in the world of <strong>rehabilitation for people with spinal cord injuries<\/strong> in her country. A gynaecologist by profession, she became paraplegic after a car accident in 1954.<\/p>\n<p>Over the following years, this inspiring disabled woman achieved several milestones, including becoming the first wheelchair surgeon. <strong>Her most significant accomplishment was establishing the first Rehabilitation Institute for people with spinal cord injuries in the city of Vellore, India<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To achieve this, Mary Verghese travelled to the Australian Rehabilitation Centre in Perth and the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in New York. She underwent years of learning and training before founding the first Rehabilitation Institute in India in 1966. This centre remains operational today.<\/p>\n<h2>Judith Heumann (1947-2023, USA)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1995\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1995\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1995 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/batec-dev.wwwarcelona.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/judy-heumann-woman-disability-batecmobility-e1709803215871.jpg\" alt=\"Judith Heumann, \u201cmother\u201d of the disability rights movement\" width=\"600\" height=\"362\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1995\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: https:\/\/judithheumann.com\/<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Judith Heumann is remembered as the <strong>\u201cmother\u201d of the disability rights movement<\/strong> for her <strong>activism and strong commitment to the struggle for disability rights<\/strong>. Heumann grappled with the stigma of being a disabled woman in a wheelchair from an early age. At the age of 5, she was denied access to school, fearing she couldn\u2019t be saved in a fire due to her inability to walk.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, after graduating with a degree in education, she was again rejected for a teaching licence. Once again based on doubts about her ability to evacuate pupils in the event of a fire. Judith eventually won her case against the board of education and became the <strong>first wheelchair-bound teacher in New York City<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>During her college years, she participated in and organised protests for her rights. This experience propelled her into a more intensive struggle.<\/p>\n<p>In 1977, <strong>she orchestrated the successful Section 504 Sit-In in San Francisco<\/strong>. She also co-founded the <a href=\"https:\/\/wid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Institute on Disability<\/a> and became the first Special Advisor for International Disability Rights at the U.S. State Department, championing the rights of people with physical disabilities around the world. She also co-authored her memoir, Being Heumann, and its young adult version, Rolling Warrior.<\/p>\n<p>Her formative years, from 9 to 18, spent at the Jened summer camp for people with physical disabilities in Hunter, New York, are chronicled in the<strong> Oscar-nominated documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crip_Camp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, depicting how a robust activism for disability rights emerged in the United States.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Mar\u00eda Carmen Riu (1951, Barcelona)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1997\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1997\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1997 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/batec-dev.wwwarcelona.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/carmen-riu-rita-granada-women-disability-batecmobility-300x251.jpg\" alt=\"Carmen Riu and Rita Granada, influential women in sports during the parade of the Spanish Paralympic team\" width=\"300\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/batec-dev.wwwarcelona.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/carmen-riu-rita-granada-women-disability-batecmobility-300x251.jpg 300w, https:\/\/batec-dev.wwwarcelona.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/carmen-riu-rita-granada-women-disability-batecmobility.jpg 489w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1997\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Riu (left) and Rita Granada (right) during the parade of the Spanish Paralympic team at the 1968 Tel Aviv Paralympics. Swimmers <strong>Mar\u00eda Carmen Riu<\/strong>, a poliomyelitis survivor since the age of 7, and <strong>Rita Granada<\/strong> were the first to represent Spain.<\/p>\n<p>The story of Mar\u00eda Carmen Riu is legendary. She achieved a double victory by becoming the first Spanish athlete to participate in a Paralympic event and became the<strong> first disabled woman to win two silver medals for Spain<\/strong>. In the subsequent edition (Munich 1972), she won another silver medal but declined it as a protest against the differential treatment received by Paralympians compared to Olympians.<\/p>\n<p>She retired from sports thereafter and she has dedicated her life to teaching psychopaedagogy. Also she became an <strong>activist for the rights of women with disabilities<\/strong>. She represented women from Catalonia at the United Nations and served on the Council of Europe on Women and Disability. Since 2003, she has chaired the <a href=\"https:\/\/donesnoestandards.cat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dones No Standards<\/a> association, which advocates for the integration of women with physical disabilities into the labour market and the eradication of gender violence.<\/p>\n<h2>Stella Jane Young (1982 \u2013 2014, Australia)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1994\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1994\" style=\"width: 940px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1994 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/batec-dev.wwwarcelona.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/stella-young-woman-disability-batecmobility.jpg\" alt=\"Stella Jane Young\u2019s TEDxSydney talk\" width=\"940\" height=\"529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/batec-dev.wwwarcelona.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/stella-young-woman-disability-batecmobility.jpg 940w, https:\/\/batec-dev.wwwarcelona.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/stella-young-woman-disability-batecmobility-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/batec-dev.wwwarcelona.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/stella-young-woman-disability-batecmobility-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1994\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: ABC News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Stella was an Australian <strong>comedian, journalist and disability rights activist<\/strong>. Born with osteogenesis imperfecta, <strong>she became involved in physical disability advocacy at the age of fourteen. <\/strong>She joined several physical disability and women\u2019s advisory and advocacy boards and councils in the Australian state of Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>Young contributed to programmes focused on disability education such as Channel 31\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ctvplus.org.au\/series\/no-limits-tv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">No Limits<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/rampup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ramp up<\/a>, an Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) website. Both programmes provides news, discussion and humour for physically disabled people in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>She <strong>deconstructed society\u2019s habit of turning people with physical disabilities into what she termed \u201cinspirational porn\u201d.<\/strong> The concept became globally popular thanks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/tedxsydney.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TEDxSydney<\/a> talk she gave in 2014 entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8K9Gg164Bsw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>I&#8217;m not your inspiration, thank you very much<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She had a widely recognised comic side. <strong>Stella made her solo debut at the 2014 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Her show Tales from the Crip, directed by Nelly Thomas, earned her the award for Best Newcomer at the festival<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>She passed away later that year. In 2017, she was posthumously inducted into the <strong>Victorian Honour Roll of Women<\/strong>, recognising her contributions as a \u201cjournalist, comedian, feminist and fierce disability activist\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>Celebrating the Unstoppable Spirit of Famous Women with Disabilities<\/h2>\n<p>Throughout history, numerous famous women with disabilities have made significant contributions leaving a lasting legacy that continues to inspire.<\/p>\n<p><strong>These women have not only broken barriers in their respective fields.
